How Learning about the Past Can Change the Future

Presented by Sunny Morton

60-Minute Presentation (All)

Learning from the past can take us to new places as communities and individuals. Hear how experts use genealogical learning to tackle public health, personal resilience, and societal change. The presenter will illustrate the principles of personal narrative and intergenerational identity through three powerful stories from her own family history: her great-grandmother’s experience at “ground zero” of the Spanish flu outbreak in the United States (1918-1919), her ancestors’ experience as survivors and rescuers during the Johnstown Flood (1889) , and her grandmother’s experience having a child with polio in 1947.
