Using the Caribbean Slave Registers and the East Indian Indentured Records

Presented by Pooran Bridgelal

60-Minute Presentation (All)

Scattered throughout the Archives in the Caribbean Islands, the Slave Registers contain a wealth of information in understanding the familial connections with the enslaved Africans. The Slave Registers were created to ensure that the enslaved Africans were not being illegally smuggled between the islands of the Caribbean. East Indian Indentureship started in the Caribbean in 1838 and ended in 1917. Everyone who left India was assigned an Emigration Pass, which included a unique number and origin of birth. This session will help participants understand how to use the Slave Registers and Emigration Passes, and interpret the information in them to trace ancestors’ place of origin.
